I didn't get through as many book as I had planned this month, but I did start a study on the book of Esther so I should include that. Here is a recap of my June reading:
The Wedding ~ We never got to the pool much between the weather and our family getting sick, I am crossing my fingers for continued good with weather so I can enjoy this by the pool in July.
The Original Homeschooling Series ~Ugh, I do not really want to think about home schooling right now, this is getting pushed until August.
The Christian Mother ~ A very interesting read, many would find it old fashioned. I really enjoyed it though.
The Excellent Wife (chapters 5-7) ~ Wow! I have been typing my reflections on the computer to post in the group on THL; it has not had much activity lately so I am not sure what I will do with my notes...maybe share on my blog...
Emilie's Creative Home Organizer & More Hours In My Day ~ Hmmm, I didn't learn much from these books. I am not the most organized person but I found many of the tips to be so pointless, I did a lot of skimming! One of my favorites: take a shallow bath, no more than three inches of water...um, no thanks! I am a shower gal, but if I were to take a bath, I would like to soak thank you, not just get my butt wet!
Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day ~ I barely skimmed this one, they continuously made mention of the fact that I could bake bread in five minutes a day, that is why I picked up the book in the first place, I felt like the author was trying to convince me a little to much...continuously, I am not kidding!
All The Way Home : Power For Your Family To Be Its Best ~ A good book, I was already familiar with many things she mentioned so it was more of a 'refresher book' rather than a 'learn something new book' which I was hoping for.
The Daily Bean : 175 Easy and Creative Bean Recipes for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and...Yes, Dessert! ~ Some interesting recipes that I am going to scan and give a try. Angel detests beans, they make her gag, so I hope I may be able to sneak a few into her. I will share any recipes my family enjoys, maybe even a desert!
A Thomas Jefferson Education ~ I have already posted on this one; I have one more book list to share this weekend. :)

~♥~ ~♥~ ~♥~
Lord you know the struggles I have had lately and I thank you for staying close and whispering in my ear.
Thank you for:
♥The warm days that have let us get outside and into the pool.
♥The wonderful ladies who are participating in the
study of your word with me.
♥Giving me discernment to know when to say no the the earthly things that compete for my time with you and my family.
♥Making my family well again, save Cowboy Fans nagging
cough, I am still asking for healing with that!
♥Quiet mornings, chirping birds and fluttering butterflies.

Music Monday ~ Meant To Live
This is a terrific song, I hope you enjoy Switchfoot singing Meant To Live. I try to find the artist's original video each week, unfortunately sometimes there is an advertisement before hand. My apologies for that, I have no control over it and am not in any way promoting Ford, I am a Chevy girl...not sure why with all the hoopla surrounding them, but I am. lol
Fumbling his confidence
And wondering why the world has passed him by
Hoping that he's bent for more than arguments
And failed attempts to fly, fly
[Chorus]
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside
Somewhere we live inside
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside
Dreaming about Providence
And whether mice or men have second tries
Maybe we've been livin with our eyes half open
Maybe we're bent and broken, broken
[Chorus]
We want more than this world's got to offer
We want more than this world's got to offer
We want more than the wars of our fathers
And everything inside screams for second life, yeah
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live
We were meant to live

My Recipe Collection ~ cheap & easy soup
I threw this together the other night because I was feeling crappy and so was Sunshine, and I hadn't planned anything for dinner. I was surprised that everyone loved it and asked that I be sure to make it again. I assure you it nothing fancy but I guess sometimes those things you whip up on the spur of the moment with no planning are all right!
ingredients:
3 packages of Maruchan Ramen noodles chicken flavor
about three cups of frozen vegetables
about one cup of chopped cooked chicken
directions:
boil seven cups of water, add frozen vegetables, cook for a few minutes
add broken noodles, cook for 2 minutes
add flavor packets and chicken and cook for one minute
This soup was very chunky, not a lot of broth, but that is how my kids like it.

Book Notes ~ Emilie's Creative Home Organizer
Here are a few interesting tips I read in Emilie's Creative Home Organizer by Emile Barnes ©1995.
~ Before freezing fresh bagels cut them in half; they will defrost faster and can be toasted while still frozen.
~ When you are packaginghamburger ground turkey take off the meat tray and flatten the meat out, then put it in a freezer bag. It will stack better in the freezer.
~ After making pies or pastry buns, sprinkle the counter with salt; it will clean up easily.
~ Old sponges cut into squares work great for covering drainage holes in flowerpots.
Here is one that I personally found quite icky ~ wash your face and brush your teeth while you're in the shower. Okay I get the face washing, but I really find the thought of teeth brushing in the shower quite gross!!!

Music Monday ~ Flood
Rain, rain on my face
It hasn't stopped raining for days
My world is a flood
Slowly I become one with the mud
[Chorus:]
But if I can't swim after forty days
and my mind is crushed by the thrashing waves
Lift me up so high that I cannot fall
Lift me up
Lift me up - when I'm falling
Lift me up - I'm weak and I'm dying
Lift me up - I need you to hold me
Lift me up - Keep me from drowning again
Downpour on my soul
Splashing in the ocean, I'm losing control
Dark sky all around
I can't feel my feet touching the ground
[Chorus]
Calm the storms that drench my eyes
Dry the streams still flowing
Cast down all the waves of sin
And guilt that overthrow me
[Chorus]
Lift me up - when I'm falling
Lift me up - I'm weak and I'm dying
Lift me up - I need you to hold me
Lift me up - Keep me from drowning again

Trying to figure some things out ~ part 3
Do you think you know where I am going with this? I sure don't, that is why these posts have been tagged my ramblings.
I only know this, that my Abba loves me and I love Him and I am going to become who He has created me to be. I am going to fulfill His plans for my life. I am going to be the best role model for family that He will grace me to be.
I am going to use my blog as a place for me to be who I am. I am going to keep track of what I am reading and what I am listening to. I am going to keep track of scriptures that I feel the need to memorize, and neat things that I come across while surfing around. I am pretty much going to use this as a place to collect all the random things that run through my mind that I either jot down on a piece of paper somewhere (and eventually misplace) or that I forget I want to remember. A journal would be too personal for me, but a scrapbook of my interests sounds like a plan. That being said I am not sure how it will work for gaining a huge audience and I am not sure how many people will be interested in what I have to mention, but that is okay with me. I am not worried about how many people read this, follow this, twitter this, link this...you get the idea! Although I do love having you stop by and I truly enjoy reading your comments, I am not going to fret over it. I was thinking of getting one of those widgets to track who comes by, but really, what is the point of that?
This is perfect.
I think I have finally figured it out.

Trying to figure some things out ~ part 2
Surprise, surprise this is how I am starting to feel about my blog...I am wondering what is the whole point of it. Now, let me tell you that I enjoy surfing the blogging world, I love reading other people's writing. I just don't feel that my blog serves any purpose, and if you happened to read about the award I won here you might have noticed that talking is my favorite way of communicating, not typing!!! I don't have wonderful recipes to share every week, great frugality tips, wonderful homeschooling creations, wisdom I have gleaned from the Lord, or cutsie pictures of my kids (this one by choice)...I could keep going you know. Besides I still can't figure out if I am supposed to type to myself or type as if someone is actually reading this. sigh...
Trying to figure some things out
I have been blogging now for over six months at something that really just started out as a fun thing to play around with, a hobby of sorts. Most things that I start on whim for the heck of it end up fizzling out as I start getting bored and then move onto the next thing that catches my eye. This is really a terrible habit that I have, not just with the fun stuff but also with other things, like scripture memorization, reading through the bible in a year or implementing something new in our family. I start off strong and all gung ho and then slowly fizzle out. Let me tell you this is not something I am proud of. sigh...

Book Notes ~ A Thomas Jefferson Education
I finished A Thomas Jefferson Education: Teaching a Generation of Leaders for the Twenty-first Century © 2000 by Oliver Van DeMille yesterday. It is a good book I would recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about the benefits of a classic education as compared to a 'public' education. Here are some of the things I took note of:
"Home schooling has long and successful tradition. Actually, it has two traditions: First, the very wealthy have always educated their children at home, some through tutors and others themselves; and second, most of the greatest thinkers, leaders, statesmen, entrepreneurs, scientists and artists of history were self-educated." pg 15
"...all education boils down to two things: the student putting in the work to educate himself, and the teacher getting the student's attention long enough and deeply enough to get him started and help him keep going." pg 23
"Find a great leader in history, and you will find at least three central elements of their education-time, mentors and classics." pg 41
"Application of knowledge to the real world is essential; no education is complete, or even particularly valuable, unless the student uses what he or she has learned to serve the family, community, society, God." pg 47
"You can't train leaders on a conveyor belt; if you want to teach students how to think, their studies must be personalized." pg 49
More on conveyor belt education, "The very message of "graduation" is misleading no matter how you slice it: 1) you'd better get your learning in by a certain date or it doesn't count; 2) you have somehow achieved in twelve years of conveyor-belt-style experiences a wealth of knowledge worthy of endorsement by the sate; 3) after twelve years you are a "finished product;" and 4) "Whew! You made it! Now you can quit learning!"" pg 99
He goes on to say that in addition to maintaining our freedom and our civilization, there are at least six other reasons to study the classics:
-the classics teach us human nature
-the classics bring us face-to-face with greatness
-the classics take us to the frontier to be conquered
-the classics force us to think
-the classics connect us to those who share the stories
-our canon becomes our plot
This book also has left me wanting to do some more research on the 'Commonplace Book', this is not the first time I have heard of it. The idea is that students write in a book everyday, summarizing the main idea or a new concept that they learned. Ask them, "What is the most important thing you learned today?" and have them write the response, focusing on content rather than technique. As the writing becomes more advanced, concentrate on grammar, spelling and other details.
Recommended classic lists to follow in another post.

Music Monday ~ Lifesong
I will keep this post short and sweet, but you may want to turn up the volume; Lifesong by Casting Crowns ROCKS!!!
Empty hands held high
Such small sacrifice
If not joined with my life
I sing in vain tonight
May the words I say
And the things I do
Make my lifesong sing
Bring a smile to You
Let my lifesong sing to You
Let my lifesong sing to You
I want to sign Your name to the end of this day
Knowing that my heart was true
Let my lifesong sing to You
Lord I give my life
A living sacrifice
To reach a world in need
To be Your hands and feet
So may the words I say
And the things I do
Make my lifesong sing
Bring a smile to You
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Let my lifesong sing to You

A New Homeschooling Group I Have Joined
Today Emma invited me to join a new homeschooling group, The Conservative Homeschooler. Since reading a few of her posts over at THL I have come to admire her strong faith and am hoping I may learn more from her over there. The first thing I noticed when I was logged in was a contest they are hosting to give away a Child Training 101 DVD. I don't know about you but I am still have much to learn about raising my kiddos. Wish me luck with the contest and while you are at it why don't you head over and see what the site has to offer.
Lion Chasers Manifesto
Mark Batterson has written a book that has been recommended to me a few times, unfortunately my library does not have In a Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day so I am patiently waiting on the Lord's blessing to be able to read it! In the mean time I came across the Lion Chasers Manifesto which is quoted is his book.
Quit living as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death. Grab life by the mane. Set God-sized goals. Pursue God-ordained passions. Go after a dream that is destined to fail without divine intervention. Keep asking questions. Keep making mistakes. Keep seeking God. Stop pointing out problems and become part of the solution. Stop repeating the past and start creating the future. Stop playing it safe and start taking risks. Accumulate experiences. Consider the lilies. Enjoy the journey. Find every excuse you can to celebrate everything you can. Live like today is the first day and last day of your life. Don't let what's wrong with you keep you from worshipping what's right with God. Burn sinful bridges. Blaze new trails. Criticize by creating. Worry less about what people think and more about what God thinks. Don't try to be who you're not. Be yourself. Laugh at yourself. Quit holding out. Quit holding back. Quit running away.
Chase the lion.
Hmmm, don't let my faults keep me from worshiping all of God's greatness. Good idea.
Chase the lion.
Hmmm, don't let my faults keep me from worshiping all of God's greatness. Good idea.

My Reading List for June

- The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks
I loved the movie The Notebook, so I read the book by the same title and loved it even more. When I realized there was sequel I added the book to my collection and figure it will be the perfect 'poolside' read this month. - The Original Homeschooling Series book 1 Home Education by Charlotte Mason
I have barely glanced through this and to be honest I think it will be a book that requires great concentration...I hope I am up for it! - The Christian Mother by John Abbott
This book was copyrighted in 1833, I printed a copy of it many months ago (before our move) and just came across it when I was organizing some files. I figure it is time to read it, huh? - The Excellent Wife (chapters 5-8) by Martha Peace
This is the book chosen for our group Books For The Soul over at The Homeschool Lounge, I have been a little behind in the discussions but reading a chapter a week this month should have me caught up. - Emilie's Creative Home Organizer & More Hours In My Day by Emilie Barnes
I just finished up The Duggars: 20 and Counting and Michelle mentioned that she made good use of Emilie's book titled Survival for Busy Women, since my library doesn't have that one I am hoping these two may be helpful :) - Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day : The Discovery That Revolutionizes Home Baking by Jeff Hertzberg
I want to bake bread more often and hope this book has some good recipes and helpful suggestions. - All The Way Home : Power For Your Family To Be Its Best by Mary Pride
I have had this book requested at my library for two months now... and it is finally ready for pick up~yaay! - The Daily Bean : 175 Easy and Creative Bean Recipes for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and...Yes, Dessert! : A Cookbook by Suzanne Caciola White
Beans for dessert, I am not sure about that, but will give the book once over for sure. :) - A Thomas Jefferson Education by Oliver Van DeMille
Another highly recommended book that appeals to my interest in education/teaching.
My Book of Blessings ~ June 2

Music Monday ~ We Live
I am beginning to really enjoy Music Mondays, especially to hear what other songs my bloggy pals are posting. Remember to put your link in your post so I can find you, and enjoy todays selection. We Live by Super Chick.
There's a cross on the side of the road
Where a mother lost a son
How could she know that the morning he left
Would be the last time she'd trade with him for a little more time
So she could say she loved him one last time
And hold him tight
But with life we never know
When we're coming up to the end of the road
So what do we do then
With tragedy around the bend?
We live we love
We forgive and never give up
Cuz the days we are given are gifts from above
And today we remember to live and to love
We live we love
We forgive and never give up
Cuz the days we are given are gifts from above
And today we remember to live and to love
There's a man who waits for the tests
To see if the cancer has spread yet
And now he asks, "So why did I wait to live till it was time to die?"
If I could have the time back how I'd live
Life is such a gift
So how does the story end?
Well this is your story and it all depends
So don't let it become true
Get out and do what we were meant to do
We live we love
We forgive and never give up
Cuz the days we are given are gifts from above
And today we remember to live and to love
We live we love
We forgive and never give up
Cuz the days we are given are gifts from above
And today we remember to live and to love
Waking up to another dark morning
People are mourning
The weather in life outside is storming
But what would it take for the clouds to break
For us to realize each day is a gift somehow, someway?
So get our heads up out of the darkness
And spark this new mindset and start to live life cuz it ain't gone yet
And tragedy is a reminder to take off the blinders
And wake up and live the life we're supposed to take up
Moving forward with all our heads up cuz life is worth living
We live we love
We forgive and never give up
Cuz the days we are given are gifts from above
And today we remember to live and to love
